Recommended Concerts and Shows in December

A fantastic part of living in the valley is the proximity to wonderful events and weather all year long. If you are trying to find an outstanding thing to do in Arizona this month, you’re in luck. Some of the year’s most highly anticipated events are occurring during December, and here are a few that should be on your list.

KMLE Acoustic Christmas
Comerica Theater, 7 p.m. December 14

Start the holiday season off with a little bit of twang! For a fantastic country thing to do in Arizona, look no further than KMLE’s Acoustic Christmas. With exceptional new artists Maggie Rose, Randy Houser, Greg Bates and Brett Eldredge, you’ll want to shine up your best two-step for a great time. This concert also benefits St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Tickets are $27-$51.

Phoenix Luxury Homes Moscow Ballet: Great Russian Nutcracker
Comerica Theatre, 2:30 and 7:30p.m. December 15 

This season celebrates the 20th anniversary of this brilliant enactment. A beautiful retelling of the great battle between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King, this drama with a Russian flair features the music of Tchaikovsky plus a wordless chorus of children’s voices to take you on an emotional journey. Dances include not only the grace and elegance of ballet, but also displays from European and Asian countries. The conflict, romance, magic, and whimsy of this incredible performance would be a lovely footnote to your holiday season.  Tickets are $27-$102.

Phoenix First: Celebration of Christmas
Various showings through December 17

One of the largest Christmas musicals in America, the Celebration of Christmas is a story about snow globes in a toy store that have magically come alive. Spectacular aerials, live animals, and an homage to the Rockettes and 1940’s vintage style take place against the splendid backdrop of a 30-piece orchestra. Maximum ticket price is $15, with most seats at no charge.

Brian Setzer Orchestra: Christmas Rocks! Extravaganza

Celebrity Theater, 8 p.m. December 18
Your toes will be tapping and your fingers will be snapping along to the rockabilly beats of this Stray Cats alum. His specialty of swing mixed generously with a helping of rock will get your pulse pumping and lift your mood. The superbly arranged orchestra will be playing both holiday favorites and originals to get you in the holiday spirit. Tickets are $60-75.

Ballet Arizona Presents The Nutcracker
Symphony Hall, various show times through December 24

A more traditional telling of the familiar story, this performance is anything but the expected. The superbly talented dancers are joined by the ever awe-inspiring Phoenix Symphony for what may be one of the most exhilarating renditions of this piece you will ever see. Beautifully choreographed and incredibly indulgent, you won’t want to miss this show. Tickets range from $33 to $169 through Ticketmaster.
