Learn about the migration habits, environmental threats, and life cycle of these creatures while you appreciate their beauty and grace. A limited opportunity to help tag and release butterflies is available on Thursdays for the duration of the exhibit period.
Music in the Garden: Sahnas Brothers
November 16, 7 – 9 p.m., members $15, non-members $21
Brothers Thano and Demitri Sahnas have developed a unique variety of music from the time they were just boys. Their wonderful performance of Spanish guitar music mixes the brothers’ Greek culture, flamenco styles, and passion for music and romance into a fascinating hybrid of sounds. Their second set features percussion and violin to further delight your ears.
Dogs’ Day in the Garden
November 17, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., $1 per dog plus garden admission
This entertaining event is the perfect opportunity to bring your leashed and vaccinated canine friends to socialize and learn. Presentations will include discussions on desert safety for dogs, treat making, ideas for pet-friendly landscaping and more. The tips and ideas from this event can be easily incorporated into the plans of your Phoenix home builders, so be sure to mention what you’ve learned. Vendors will provide an array of tasty samples for your pet and photo opportunities are available too.
Las Noches de las Luminarias
November 30 – December 30, Thursdays through Sundays. Adults $25, children 12 & under $12.50.
Over 8,000 hand-lit luminaries glow delicately and beautifully in the dark desert night during this month-long seasonal celebration. Thousands of twinkle lights adorn the already magical garden for this breathtaking display. Enjoy nightly entertainment, carolers, warm cider, magnificent food, friends and family throughout the valley’s longest holiday event. Luminary sponsorships may be purchased in honor of a loved one who has fought cancer or you may leave a free tribute on the Walk of Hope.
Whispers of a New World: Sculpture by Carolina Escobar
Daily now – May 27, 2013, included in garden admission.
Local artist Carolina Escobar uses copper screen, steel, and resin-soaked cloth to sculpt imaginative versions of nature’s offerings. The stunning pieces are scattered throughout the Desert Discovery Loop Trail and are also on display in the garden’s Ottosen Gallery for more close-up investigation. Effervescent colors and flowing shapes provide a rich textural experience for the eye to enjoy, mixing art and nature in an intriguing way.
